General Marching Related Discussion / Re: General Effect vs Visual
« on: November 01, 2012, 05:47:12 PM »
For the most part, visual performance is an adjudication of the technical aspects of a performance, and the proficiency of the performers to perform the repertoire (composition) of the show.  The judge will look for qualities of a performance, and watch the entire program crediting the performance level as well as the difficulty of what is asked in terms of achievement.

The Visual Effect judge is charged with evaluating the overall challenges of the program in terms of effect; did that visual moment work well?  Was it coordinated with the musical book?  Is the shade of the flags an appropriate color for the musical moment?  Does the guard work match the music?  The job of the visual effect judge is to go where the band wants, to watch what they create for focus, and to comment on the success of that effort.  The caption is often one where the judge reacts to what is done, and then assesses the overall picture.  If an effect judge says things such as, "what do you want me to watch?" "Where should I be looking?"  "How come the musical moment is here, but the visual moment is somewhere else?"

The above is far from definitive.  Music plays an important part of both captions, as the "appropriateness" of the design as it related to the musical moment (and vise versa) is an important part of the consideration for both captions.

Interesting...I never thought about the 'visual effect' judge considering the musical aspects (at least how it relates to what is going on visually), but I guess that makes total sense.  So there could be some basis on musicality as it relates to the visual that would affect the judging of this category?  Visual in relation to music? (if that even makes sense) :)   Does that hold true to Music Effect?  Does the music being played in relation to what is being seen affect the music effect score?

The next thing you know, they'll be taking away our noisemakers, missile-like devices and video recorders.

I think GregM is pretty close here.  I haven't seen VL and John Glenn this season so it's hard for me to predict beyond 5th or 6th.  Without any bias to anyone, I'm hoping TL will make it through this weekend...I know they can play!

Wow...I was blown away by Grain Valley.  Not sure what class they belong to, but yikes.  They were impressive.

Mac's visual is really good...that's what I remembered from last weekend.  TL had some great runs with the winds.  Loved that!  I also thought that Knox sounded really good musically.  And Woodlan has some good visuals going on there!  Somewhat surprised Knox didn't make it but that's the difference between a 'casual' fan and a musically trained judge.  I can't wait for Semi-State...I just pray the weather will cooperate with us on that day!

Time to bring this back up to the top.  I think the Mustangs may have something for the 'Big 3' in the North this year.  Time will tell, but I believe!   ;)

Wow, you went way back...I thought Mr Mello had returned!  Have you tried clearing your cache (temp files)?

We were at Ben Davis that day for an afternoon show...I got scorched.  We had a later show at Carmel, and I remember finding some shade after a nice lady let me into the stadium early.  I felt like I had spent the day on a south Florida beach, especially with all the reflective heat that aluminum bleachers create at a place like Ben Davis.  Looks like this year we won't have to worry about excessive heat.  Hopefully it will be DRY!

Just saw they are Ben Davis later in the evening, which I assume is why...does that mean they will perform in exhibition at CG?

Just curious if anyone knows why Bloomington South is listed in Class D for this weekend at CG?

I can't wait to be able to see the northern bands (plus still waiting to see a lot of the south), but what tweaks my interest as much as anything is the resurgence of Mac.  Some things seem so clearly defined at the moment.  But as I always say, "Can’t wait for the north and south to go head to head"!  The 'defining of lines' are what makes this activity so exciting to the fans in the stand!  At least to this fan in the stand.  ;)

I still like the ring of "New Castle Chrysler"  :P but have seen the show 2 times so far this year...my favorite Class B show I've seen in 2012!  LOVE the musicianship!! You guys are killing it out there!

Bwaahhhh!  Another Class C nail biter this year.  The North are killing with the scores compared to the South.  I can't wait until the big dogs from both regions go head to head to see how things really stack up!   :)

Here's to a great run for everyone this weekend!
